Word learning
This week we are looking at Chua & Pan (2026), a recent paper on testing the efficacy of guessing-with-feedback training methods for vocabulary, as used by language-learning apps like Duolingo, and whether it leads to better learning than a more passive “reading” style of presentation. The authors are based at the National University of Singapore, and Prof. Pan (who leads the Learning Sciences Laboratory there) was extremely helpful in providing their stimuli for the practical this week - we will implement the image-to-word version of the experiment.

As usual, as you read this paper make notes of any questions, criticisms or ideas it gives you, and I’ll leave time in the Monday lecture slot so we can discuss these in class. You can raise these on the spot in class, or flag them up using the pre-lecture questions form on Learn.
